Optimize Boot Time

Note: Although these snapshots come from an XP system they apply to all Vista, Windows 7 and 8 systems as well (the pictures will look a little different but the concepts still apply).  If you selected a Windows Classic Theme this is what would appear.

Msconfig in run dialogue window
To optimize boot time touch the Windows logo key on your keyboard and the letter "r" and it will bring up the "Run" box, enter "msconfig" (no quotes).

Msconfig main window
Once msconfig is open  select "Boot."

Msconfig Boot Options (XP version)
Set the timeout to 3 seconds.   While there select "Advanced Options"

Msconfig Boot Options Advanced window (XP version)
Click Number of processors.  In the scroll box you will see how many processors your system has. Select the largest number available and then click OK.

Msconfig Boot Options apply changes window
Click "Apply"

Msconfig Restart window

Msconfig confirmation of changes window
Click the "Don't show this message ..." and Click OK.  Another speed improvement.  These tweaks are cumulative, some are very obvious and some not so, but combined make for a happy system.
